Robert Strong is an East coast architect with a long-standing interest in Wilhelm Reich and his "orgone energy" chambers, one of which he has installed in his self-designed home. I have been giving him feedback on his "manifesto" all year and now it is ready to be shared.

A Tribute to Phil Lesh of The Grateful Dead
I first heard Phil Lesh and the other members of the Grateful Dead perform in June 1967 when
they played at the Cafe Au Go-Go in Greenwich Village, New York. There were only a few dozen people in the audience, as that was their first East Coast performance, but that soon changed, and their audiences began to number in the thousands. Soon thereafter I met Mickey Hart, one of the band’s drummers, at a party and then became friends with other members of the band as well. At that time, I was conducting dream telepathy research and experiments at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn. Jerry Garcia suggested that we conduct some experimental sessions when the Dead were performing for six nights in New York at the Capitol Theater. Audience members were instructed via a set of instructions projected on a large video screen that was behind the band and were asked to attempt to “send” various painted images that were subsequently displayed on the same video screen, while the Dead were performing an extended instrumental “jam.” Meanwhile, in a laboratory many miles from the performance was a sleeping research participant who recounted a series of dreams that included imagery from most of the paintings. We published our statistically significant results in 1973, and this research has since appeared in many anthologies. I continued to enjoy the music of the Grateful Dead, knowing that Phil had co-written several of their most endearing songs, including “Box of Rain,” which was the finale of their last performance in 1995. After Jerry Garcia’s demise Phil continue to play in a number of Dead offshoot bands, and then, in 2005 he opened Terrapin Crossroads, a musical venue and restaurant in Northern California where I often enjoyed hosting friends. The food was excellent, and we always loved hearing Phil perform, sometimes with his own band, sometimes with his sons and their friends. When I heard of Phil’s passing I could not help but think back to 1967, when I first heard him play, and how surprised he might have been to know that his death would be featured in newspapers and other media across the globe.
